Moving With The Times: CALL FOR ARTIST SUBMISSIONS! (Deadline 19th August 2019)
A commissioned evening of dance by Dancin’ Oxford and Pegasus Theatre
28th – 29th Feb 2020, Pegasus, Oxford
Part of Dancin’ Oxford 2020 Spring Dance Festival
Dancin’ Oxford and Pegasus Theatre are delighted to announce that Moving With The Times will continue in 2020, with the offer of three commissions to dance artists/companies to present and showcase work. Each selected company or artist will receive a guaranteed £1,000 commission fee to create the work, plus technical support and marketing / promotion provided by Pegasus and Dancin’ Oxford (including specific print produced for the show). Pegasus may be able to offer some free daytime studio rehearsal space (if available) leading up to and during the production week (wk commencing 25th February). Selected artists will be invited to attend a meeting with the Technical / Marketing team in late Autumn (Date TBA) to discuss technical possibilities and deadlines for technical / marketing information.
There will be a Moving With The Times Preview Evening (called ‘First Look’) at Pegasus on Friday 17th January 2020 (7.30pm). NB: All selected artists will be expected to perform an extract of their piece at the ‘First Look’ event, at which there will be the opportunity for facilitated audience feedback. More details to follow on this event in due course.
BRIEF for the work:-
- Max 20-30 mins in length for each piece;
- Finished piece of professional work (not work-in-progress);
- Group, solo and duet work are all welcome;
- Work involving cross-art form collaboration is welcome;
- Pieces should engage in some way with the title / theme of the show ‘Moving with the Times’;
As part of the selection process, all shortlisted artists / companies will be required to meet with the selection panel to discuss their proposed work. This meeting will take place during the day (between 10-3pm) on Thursday 12th September 2019 at Pegasus Theatre. The selection panel will include representatives from Pegasus Theatre, Dancin’ Oxford plus external representatives.
Criteria for selection will be based on:
- Quality of proposal and proposed work (applicants will need to demonstrate quality within the proposal – this can include videos / reviews / outline of how quality will be ensured)
- Work involving a collaborative approach to outline the nature of the collaboration
- Impact on artist / company’s own professional development (placing the MWTT show within the wider context of your work, including longer term aspirations for the work to be created)
- Clarity on who your audience is and where the work is pitched in order to market it effectively
The deadline for proposals is Monday 19th August 2019 (9.00am). Successful applicants will be informed as soon as possible following the panel meeting.
To apply:- Please provide your name / contact details together with a detailed Proposal:– which needs to include all the key criteria outlined above. We would also ask for an outline of your intended audience, and what you think makes your piece distinctive or striking. Please also provide an outline of a provisional rehearsal schedule to let us know how you will make the piece possible.
Applications to be sent by post or email to: Claire Thompson, Arts Development Officer, Oxford City Council, St Aldate’s, Oxford OX1 1BX / E-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Additional Briefing Notes:
Programme:- Moving With The Times will be part of the Spring Dance Festival in 2020.
Ticket prices:- Tickets will be set at £13 full / £9 concessions & £6 under 18s
Rehearsal space at Pegasus:- Pegasus will have limited rehearsal space available in the lead-up to the performance dates. (To be arranged in advance with Pegasus). NB: Please note that if you need additional rehearsal time on top of your booked slots at Pegasus, you will need to cover the cost of that. (Dancin’ Oxford and ODF will be able to offer support in finding a suitable alternative space for your extra rehearsals but will not be able to cover any additional costs related to this).
Marketing:- Moving With The Times has the support of both Marketing Co-ordinator at Pegasus and Tei Williams (Dancin’ Oxford) to effectively market the performances. We also expect those presenting work to take an active role in promoting their work and the event as a whole. We will ideally need high quality images of your work for the PR / Marketing..
‘First Look’ evening (18th January 2019 at 7.30pm):- This is compulsory for selected MWTT artists – who will have the opportunity to formally invite selected people to attend and see the work. Previous feedback has evidenced it’s benefit to both artists to show work and receive feedback, and also aids audience development for the public performances during Dancin’ Oxford.
Insurance:- All selected artists will be requested to sign a contract, which states that all artists should have public liability insurance. Artists / companies are responsible (both in rehearsal and performance) for themselves, the venue and to members of the public, and neither Pegasus nor Dancin’ Oxford will be able to accept liability to any damage / injury caused as a direct result of a rehearsal or performance. (If you have any queries about this, do speak to Claire Thompson on 01865 252820).
Selection process:- Over recent years the selection process has proved to be highly competitive which is a key reason for the selection panel to meet with the artists / companies applying to discuss the work / proposals in more details, particularly as the works are commissioned rather than presented.
Pegasus:- From its base in the heart of East Oxford, Pegasus Theatre has been creating theatre for, by and with young people for over 50 years. Its mission is to provide the inspiration for journeys filled with creative opportunity, aspiration and imagination for young audiences aged 0-25. Applications that connect with Pegasus’ mission to create work for young audiences would be welcomed.
